Some old photographs related to Japan taken during the Meiji and Taisho eras are held by "archival institutions" overseas. These are now being digitized and made available online. There is a lot of information you need to know: where they are, what they are, why they are there, how they were digitized, how to access online sources, and whether they are connected to portal sites. In addition, they are constantly being updated. Early photographs taken at the end of the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods are attracting attention and are increasingly published in books. This presentation is an attempt to provide a doorway for research on old photographic materials related to Japan based on information from both sources. Although a comprehensive study has not been completed, and no conclusions have been reached, it will briefly summarize the old photograph viewed in foreign institutions by the presenter. In addition, the impact of the Cultural Japan which causes the changes in research work will be examined.
