According to a survey of the Asahi and Yomiuri newspapers, the term "digital archive" first appeared in a newspaper article in the Yomiuri on March 11, 1996, in an article titled "International Red Cross Initiative for Cultural Properties Roundtable Meeting: Digital Preservation Techniques in the Spotlight," which was preceded by an article in the Yomiuri on April 10, 1996, titled "Digital Archive Promotion Council Launched: Preserving Cultural Heritage with Digital Images. After that, the number of articles remained at more than 20 every year from 2001 to 2005, then stagnated, and increased again after 2015, with more than 70 articles published annually since 2018.
